Ako Mātātupu: Teach First NZ believes it is possible for all young people in Aotearoa New Zealand to realise their full potential—but we have a problem.
Our country has one of the highest rates of educational inequality in the developed world, ranking 33rd out of 38 countries.
We are working to help change that, by attracting carefully selected candidates to take part in a two-year, employment-based teaching and education leadership programme, partnering with schools serving low-income communities across the country. Participants teach in a secondary school serving a low-income community whilst completing a Masters qualification.
After graduating from the programme with a Masters of Teaching and Education Leadership, these inspirational leaders are able to not only teach in schools where they are needed most, but also to help address systemic social and educational injustice.
In this way, Ako Mātātupu: Teach First NZ is helping to work towards a fair and equitable New Zealand, and a brighter future for all our young people.
To date, programme participants and alumni have directly worked with 30,000 children attending 40 secondary schools in low-income communities across the country. With your help, we expect to reach 140,000 children from low-income backgrounds by 2021.
All our young people deserve equal opportunities and need inspirational leadership. Please support Ako Mātātupu: Teach First NZ to help make that happen.
